Shanghai in 'no danger'
EVEN in the worst case scenario, Shanghai will have no need of extra protection from radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear facility in Japan.
A nuclear expert said yesterday the city was too far from the plant for it to present any danger.
Shen Sen, senior engineer at the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute, said: "Shanghai is over 2,000 kilometers from the nuclear plant. Such a long distance can dilute almost all the radioactive substances, whose control area is usually 30 kilometers."
He was speaking at a public meeting at the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology yesterday afternoon where experts gathered to explain the crisis in Japan and any potential impact on the city.
Weather experts told the meeting that under current conditions there was no risk of radioactive substances reaching Shanghai.
