Stock index linked to coronary disease deaths

STOCK volatility is a risk factor for coronary heart disease mortality, local university researchers said today.

Fudan University scientists studied the relationship between daily fluctuations of the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index and local CHD deaths between 2006 and 2008, a period that saw the Chinese stock markets experience unprecedented growth and collapse.

They found that the sharp rise and fall of market index were matched by more deaths while fewer deaths occurred when the index had little or no change.

The data was analyzed with a model that tracks long-term and seasonal trends of CHD mortality, day of the week, Index closing value, weather conditions, and air pollution levels, the scientists said.

The research result has been published by the European Heart Journal online, the university officials said today.
