Student recovering from wire accident

A STUDENT whose windpipe was severely damaged by an overhanging wire as she rode home on her electric bicycle is recovering after an operation, Zhongshan Hospital said yesterday.

Han Yan, from Anhui Province, suffered a 5-centimeter injury to her windpipe on May 27 as she traveled home from studying at school in preparation for the national college entrance examination.

After the accident, the 17-year-old called her father on her cellphone.

He found his daughter on the route between Han's school and home.

But no local hospital was willing to operate on such a rare and severe injury, so Han's family brought the girl to Shanghai's Zhongshan Hospital the next day.

While she arrived at Zhongshan, Han had a serious infection and had missed the optimum time for surgery.

After controlling infection, doctors operated on Thursday, repairing her windpipe. Han has also been offered psychological consultation.

She will miss this year's college entrance examination, which starts tomorrow, officials said.

Hospital officials said Han can now breathe independently and will be released soon.
