Surgery for quake victim's leg scars

A 17-year-old girl injured in the Sichuan earthquake three years ago had surgery in Shanghai yesterday to remove a pair of 40-centimeter scars on her right leg, which had been left from previous surgery that saved her leg after she was buried under the debris.

Doctors from a local private hospital said the two-hour surgery on Ye Xingyin was successful and that they will also offer her treatment to improve function in her leg, on which she has some trouble walking.

Officials from Shanghai Charity Foundation, which sponsored the surgery, said removal of the scars was not only a physical treatment but also a psychological treatment for Ye, who said her dream is to become a flight attendant.

Ye had planed to celebrate her birthday with her parents on May 12 three years ago, when the 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan in the afternoon and claimed of lives of her 24 classmates. Ye was buried by the collapsed school building and rescued 11 hours later.

Ye will become a college student in September.
