TCM experts say extra sleep is good for health

TRADITIONAL Chinese Medicine experts are suggesting people sleep one extra hour each day during the hot weather.

TCM experts said good sleep and proper eating habits are important for the human body to store energy.

Since organs are the most inactive between midnight and 4am and people can feel very tired at noon, good sleep during these periods is extremely beneficial to people's health, said He Yumin from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

"Research found that a one-hour nap at noon can decrease the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in seniors," he said. "A stable mood is also important as autumn arrives since people can become more sentimental in this season."

Humidity removal and heat protection are also keys to good health in the summer as it is still quite hot and there are frequent thunderstorms. Drinking more water and eating more fruit ensure the body is properly hydrated.

The temperature difference before and after thunderstorms could lead to a cold. Experts suggest people try food therapy for inner balance.

They also suggest avoiding radishes and turnips, since these vegetables can harm a person's qi, or energy.
