Tainted batch of capsules found in Shanghai

ONE batch of chromium-tainted capsules has been found in Shanghai among 52 samples from 26 pharmaceutical companies checked, the city's Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.

Meanwhile, it said samples from the city's two capsule manufacturing companies met the national standard.

The capsules with excessive chromium were used by Shanghai Fudan Forward Pharmaceutical Co Ltd to produce Huperzine A capsules, a prescribed medicine for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The capsule was produced by Xinchang Kangnuo Capsule Co Ltd in Zhejiang Province.

The FDA has ordered Kangnuo to recall the entire batch and has sealed all relevant products at Fudan Forward.
