Tonic companies face FDA action

THE Shanghai Food and Drug Administration yesterday reported two tonics detected with illegal chemical compounds and another using a competitor's product license to cheat the public.

Two production batches of a prostate tonic made by the Beijing Cidejindian Biological Technology Co were found to have chemicals used in licensed medicines.

The Bainiantong Capsule produced on March 5 by the Qinghai Bainiantang Health Tonics Co contained five chemicals used in painkillers or anti-inflammatories.

The tonic was badged as a rheumatism treatment.

Health tonics must receive a license from the Ministry of Health or the State Food and Drug Administration and certain medical ingredients must not be used.

The Baixing Capsule, whose maker was not named, was found using the license of another tonic. This capsule was sold as a diabetes tonic.

Shanghai FDA will proceed with disciplinary action.
