Too little, too late, it's a nightmare
LOCAL people go to bed too late and more than a third don't get enough sleep, according to a government survey.
Factors such as noise and light are major reasons for poor sleep patterns, according to the survey on smmail.cn, a government-run public information and research platform. This was released ahead of today's World Sleep Day.
Some 3,459 people took part in the online survey, which found many people go to bed too late - nearly 40 percent after 11pm on work nights, with the figure rising to 50 percent at weekends.
According to experts, the best time to go to bed to ensure a good night's sleep is between 10:30pm and 11pm.
The survey also revealed that only 56 percent of people sleep 7 to 8 hours per day - the recommended amount. Some 9 percent sleep for more than 8 hours, 32 percent sleep 5 to 6 hours and 3 percent sleep less than 5 hours.
And although an afternoon nap is believed to be useful to relieve fatigue and catch up on lost sleep, 53 percent of people take no rest or nap for less than 5 minutes.
About 72 percent of those surveyed complained of occasional insomnia, with 13 percent saying they suffer difficulties sleeping at least three times a week and the problem lasts more than a month.
However, only 7 percent of people have visited doctors for treatment.
Meanwhile, a bilingual in-taxi survey conducted by Touchmedia on 109,654 taxi passengers found office workers don't sleep as little as may have been expected, while daytime stress, the environment and an active social life are major reasons impacting their sleep quality.
About 52 percent of taxi passengers sleep between 7 and 10 hours per day, while 7.6 percent sleep less than 3 hours. Some 65 percent fall asleep within 15 minutes, while 12.3 percent take more than an hour to fall asleep.
