Uni students keen on surgery

WITH the end of the academic year rapidly approaching, a cosmetic surgery hospital has recorded an increase in inquiries from university students.

“The traditional peak seasons are the summer and winter holidays,” said Dr He Jinlong, president of the Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital.

“We get a lot of seniors in May and July as they consider plastic surgery as an investment in their careers,” he said.

“The most popular procedures are double eyelid and nose reshaping,” he said.

If a person is considering having a procedure, he or she must go to a reputable practitioner and avoid the “underground” clinics, He said.

Alisa An, a 22-year-old, said she had recently visited He to have a forehead implant removed. She had it inserted at an unregistered clinic but it became infected.

The art student from Ningbo City in Zhejiang Province said she also had her nose reshaped at an underground clinic in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, four years ago. The procedure cost just 800 yuan (US$129).

Though she liked her new look, the nose was problematical and bled often, she said. So she later went to a registered clinic and had the implant removed and a new one inserted.

“Many of my friends have had plastic surgery. It’s really popular nowadays,” she said.

An said she has spent about 600,000 yuan on surgical procedures in recent years. She raised the funds by selling the car her mother bought her.

“But after I had the infection, I told my father that I won’t have any more procedures and he is happy about that,” she said.
