Urgent appeal for RH negative blood donors

SHANGHAI Blood Administration officials are calling on people with the rare RH negative blood (type O) to make an emergency blood donation to save the life of a 49-year-old woman who suffers extensive gasoline burns.

The woman, surnamed Ye, has burns over 80 percent of her body surface and has been transferred from a hospital in Zhejiang Province to Shanghai Ruijin Hospital. She has used 3.4 liters of blood since May 21 and most of the blood came from urgent donations by local people.

"The hospital contacted with us for another eight units of blood for surgery this week and we only have three units so far," said Lu Yi, a blood administration official, today.

"We want more people with RH negative blood to contact us. We can't give all the available supply to the woman in case of there is another emergency. So the shortage must be filled by donors, including foreigners."

RH negative blood is very rare among Asian people. In China, the ratio is 2-4 per 1,000 people. Therefore it is also called "panda blood" because of its rareness. However, the ratio is 15:100 among Caucasians.
