Vertebrates of the ocean on display at museum

AN exhibition featuring 64 specimens of vertebrates from the world's oceans will open tomorrow at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

The Spirit of the Ocean exhibition includes endangered species like a whale shark, finless dolphin and grey reef shark.

The specimens were made after the animals had died. Some died from pollution or were hit by a ship's propeller, museum officials said.

Highlights include the specimen of a 5-meter-long whale shark, the world's biggest species of fish, and a giant manta ray with wings that extend nine meters.

The plasticized specimens also include a bottlenose dolphin and emperor penguin.

Visitors can scan a two-dimensional code beside each exhibit by mobile phone to learn more about each species.

The exhibition will run until January 10.

Exhibition designer Chen Ying said some of the exhibits will be moved to the new natural science museum that is under construction in downtown Jing'an District. The new museum will open next year.
