Warning over blood pressure awareness

HIGH blood pressure has become a major health threat among the people of Shanghai, and their generally low prevention awareness is worsening the risks, according to a survey by the city's health bureau.

To coincide with National High Blood Pressure Prevention Day today, the Shanghai Health Bureau is urging families to improve their awareness of diseases linked to high blood pressure and to increase the frequency of checks that can be made at home.

In a survey, the bureau found one in four of the city's adults has high blood pressure, implying about 4 million Shanghai residents live with the problem.

The bureau said about 34,000 locals are killed by cardiac and brain vessel diseases each year, and between 40 and 60 percent of them are related to high blood pressure.

The survey revealed that only 6.8 percent of people diagnosed with high blood pressure conduct daily checks on themselves at home.

Most said they checked their blood pressure only when they felt dizzy or uncomfortable.
