Warning over overseas IVF trend
DOCTORS have warned Shanghai women going overseas for IVF treatment to be wary of online agencies offering this service.
This follows reports from city hospitals of a big increase in unmarried women coming for IVF consultations prior to heading abroad. They did not give figures.
Unmarried women cannot get IVF in China as it is only available to couples experiencing difficulties conceiving.
Dr Dai Liangtu, director of Shanghai No.411 People’s Liberation Army Hospital gynecology department, warned of the dangers of seeking IVF overseas.
“They should take the risks into consideration. Hospitals and IVF technology agencies introduced online may be not trustworthy,” he said.
But some unmarried women wanting a child see going abroad for IVF through a foreign sperm bank as their best option.
One 33-year-old woman, surnamed Chen, told how she has been going to Shanghai No.411 Hospital for IVF health checks.
“I’ll go abroad in the second half of this year if I pass all the checks,” she said.
This is popular among white-collar women, who have high income and high education background but haven’t found a suitable man.
“The whole process of finding a hospital and consulting about IVF are conducted through an agency,” she added.
