Washing Is Key To Ensuring Safety
WASHING in water is still the most effective method to remove pesticide residue on vegetables and fruit, said food safety officials and medical experts over the weekend.
Gu Zhenhua, director of the food supervision department of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, said residents can protect themselves by repeatedly washing vegetables before cooking.
"Soaking vegetables is another method. But don't soak for more than 30 minutes in order to protect the nutrition value of the food," he said.
Officials said most pesticide residue is on the skin of fruit and vegetables, so careful washing and peeling are effective ways to combat the harm of pesticide residue.
Du Xiangge, from the China Agricultural University, suggested people wash vegetables with water that has been used to rinse rice. He said this water is alkaline, so it works well to remove pesticides, which are acidic.
