Woman lends an ear ... to a centipede

LOCAL doctors received quite a chill when they helped remove a 5-centimeter centipede from the ear of a young woman on Tuesday evening.

The woman claimed the animal may have entered her ear canal while she was talking on the phone. The 24-year-old woman surnamed Zhu rushed to the emergency room of Changhai Hospital in Yangpu District about 5pm on Tuesday, crying "a worm, a worm!"

She said she had been lying on the bed of her company dorm, having a heated phone conversation with her friend. Suddenly, she felt something like a worm moving inside her left ear. It was painful and itchy, she said.

Her roommates checked the ear and indeed saw something - what they thought was a worm. Doctors confirmed something was alive inside, and as they prepared to take it by forceps, the centipede crawled out on its own.

According to doctors, if an insect or similar animal like a cockroach, fly or centipede enters an ear, people can try using light or a small amount of sesame oil to lure it out. Otherwise they should go to a hospital.
