Xuhui District invests in life science industry
XUHUI District has pledged to allocate 100 million yuan per year to support the biomedicine industry as more than 50 research centers and laboratories from home and abroad have been set up in Xuhui, local officials said today.
Life science will become a pillar industry in the district, said Bao Bingzhang, vice mayor of Xuhui District, at the inauguration of Janssen Pharmaceutical Ltd laboratory in the Fenglin Life Science Park.
Shanghai is leading the country in life science research and development as the city has attracted many of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies to open research centers and labs here, said Ding Kuiling, director of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, which is also based in the park.
The new Janssen Pharmaceutical laboratory will focus on the research of immunology, tumor and infectious diseases, said Paul Stoffel, chairman of the Janssen Pharmaceutical.
The US-based Quintiles, the world's largest bio-pharmaceutical services provider, also set up a US$14 million joint-venture lab in the park to develop new drugs.
Other institutions in the park include the Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the research centers of many local hospitals. Last October, the local government set up a life science federation in the park to encourage information sharing and joint research.
