172 Metro ticket evaders caught this morning

SHANGHAI Metro authority said today it is strengthening the crackdown on subway ticket evaders as the Spring Festival travel rush has set in.

Metro employees nabbed 172 ticket evaders this morning during the rush hour in four busy stations, including the Zhongshan Park Station and Xinzhuang Station and fined them 4,354 yuan in total.

Some passengers just jumped over the ticket turnstiles while others were found using senior citizen cards or other fake certificates to dodge train fares, said officials.

A few evaders simply said they had no money after they were caught.

The Metro operator deployed a 40-strong law enforcement team along 12 lines to fight ticket evasion but their number is inadequate to patrol all the stations, especially during peak travel hours.

The city's Metro system transports about 6 million people a day and more than 7 million on a particular day.

More security staff will be added to deal with ticket evaders, the authority said.
