2 detained over fatal hit-and-run accident

LOCAL police have detained two suspects involved in a hit-and-run traffic accident that killed one woman and injured another on Tuesday, officers said yesterday.
The driver, a local man surnamed Wang, surrendered to police after the accident, while the car's owner, surnamed Ma, from Jiangsu Province, was caught by police later on Tuesday.
Wang allegedly told police that Ma, who was also in the car, told him to flee the scene.
Surveillance tapes show two elderly women were hit by a grey car when crossing at the intersection of Xujiahui Road and Zhizaoju Road in Luwan District at 6:42am on Tuesday.
They were walking slowly, hand in hand when they were struck by the vehicle. The car didn't stop.
The two women were over 70 years old. They both suffered severe head injuries and broken bones. They were sent to Ruijin Hospital.
One woman, surnamed Cen, died in hospital yesterday morning while the other, surnamed Yang, is still in critical condition after receiving brain surgery.
