3 killed, more than 30 hurt in bus crash
THREE people were killed and more than 30 others injured in a bus crash yesterday afternoon on a highway in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, police said.
One of the injured was in critical condition, they said.
The accident happened at about 12:40pm near the intersection of S2 Hulu Expressway and Daye Expressway in Pudong, the police said.
The bus, loaded fully with more than 40 passengers, was heading from downtown to the Shengsi County, in the city's neighboring Zhejiang Province, when it hit a car in front and lost control.
Witnesses said the bus swerved to the right after it hit the car, crashing into the guardrail for 6 meters and then falling off the roadbed.
"There was a huge swing of the bus, which I thought was a hard brake or something," said one of the few uninjured passengers. "It was all in a sudden when the bus fell off the highway before I could react. Passengers at the back were thrown off from the seats."
In the moments before the crash, witnesses said, the car had a breakdown when it blew a tire. The distance between the two vehicles was too short for the bus driver to avoid hitting the car.
The detailed cause of the crash was still unclear and the investigation was continuing last night, the police said.
Witnesses described the scene as grisly. The bus was seriously damaged, the windows on one side all smashed, a wheel fallen off. Bloodstains smeared the bus.
After the crash, the police cordoned off part of the S2 highway to make way for emergency workers.
It took 16 ambulances to carry the injured to hospitals.
Most of the victims were rushed to the Nanhui Central Hospital in Pudong and the rest to the Fengcheng Hospital in Fengxian District.
A crane truck was used to move the bus away from the scene. Traffic resumed later in the afternoon.
The accident was the second fatal bus crash in Pudong in the past two weeks.
A passenger was killed and 29 people injured when an World Expo shuttle bus crashed into a heavy truck on June 21 on the S32 Expressway.
