3 new Metro lines to ease pressure

SHANGHAI is planning three new Metro lines — numbers 20, 22 and 24 — to form a ring near the city’s Middle Ring Road and ease pressure on existing lines, officials said yesterday.

Line 20 will connect the east and west parts of the northern downtown area, running through Hongkou, Putuo, Jing’an, Yangpu districts and the Pudong New Area, linking Shanghai West Railway Station, the Daning and Wujiaochang commercial areas and Waigaoqiao in Pudong.

Line 22, which will form a C-shape in the southwest downtown area, will connect several major residential areas including Dachang in Baoshan and Taopu in Putuo District.

The north-south Line 24 will link the Huangpu River bank in Yangpu District with the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in Pudong, according to the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration.

The new lines will distribute the flow of passengers across the subway network, alleviating the pressure on Line 4, according to a senior administration official.

The ring-shaped Line 4, which connects many other lines in the city, is the busiest in the network, especially during peak hours.

Lines 3 and 4 share 10 stations between Baoshan and Yishan roads stations, forcing commuters to wait for at least five minutes for trains.
