30 flights canceled due to fog at airports

THIRTY flights were canceled and 170 were delayed at Shanghai’s two airports yesterday due to heavy fog.

The bad weather reduced visibility to 1,200 meters at Pudong airport about 8am yesterday, and many flights were canceled or delayed, the airport said.

Heavy fog began affecting both airports on Monday night when several flights were delayed or diverted.

The fog, caused by high humidity and low winds, triggered a yellow alert overnight.

The alert was lifted at 8:40am by the local weather bureau after the fog cleared.

As of 5pm yesterday, about 20 flights had been diverted to other airports because of poor conditions, Shanghai TV said.

At 6:05pm, the weather bureau released a new yellow alert as thundershowers continued to affect flights into the city.

Both China Southern and China Eastern airlines diverted several domestic flights due to the heavy fog.

The airport authority told passengers to check with their carriers about flights before going to the airport.
