300,000 volunteers to assist police in maintaining order
MORE than 300,000 citizen volunteers were deployed in the city by police to assist in security for next week’s regional Asian summit in Shanghai.
The volunteers are residents recommended by district governments. Among them, 40,000 were deployed at Metro stations and 60,000 were put on street patrols. Over 2,000 volunteers were dispatched to smaller city waterways.
Wu Ming, a retired man aged nearly 70, said the most exciting moment is putting on his security volunteer uniform — a yellow vest and a red armband — every morning. “It’s a great honor to work as a security volunteer,” Wu said. “My family is proud of me.”
The volunteers will also be working in residential communities, maintaining public order and looking for public safety hazards.
Two volunteers will be posted at each of the city’s 328 subway stations, Metro authorities said yesterday.
The Metro police also raised the security level for the summit, creating 25 groups — with each group having one armed SWAT officer and two policemen — who will patrol key points, especially at interchange stations with large crowds.
Three staff members, instead of the usual two, will be stationed at the security check areas at every station. Commuters who refuse to comply with security checks and create public disturbance can face criminal detention.
According to security regulations, all big bags have to be put into the scanning machine while smaller ones are checked randomly. Commuters carrying large quantity of liquid will have to open the bottle for checks.
More than 5,600 police officers — 1,000 armed — are currently patrolling the city every day. Police have dispatched 684 armed units to patrol major bus hubs, and the fire department said it has cleared almost half a million fire hazards from the city during the first four months of this year.
