4 hurt when truck snaps power cable

A WOMAN four months pregnant and three other pedestrians were injured about 1pm yesterday after an overhead cable for buses ruptured and fell to the ground during a chaotic traffic accident blamed on an overloaded truck.

None of the victims was critically injured. The most seriously hurt had skin lacerations on the head, while others sustained mostly cuts and bruises.

A cargo truck carrying freight that exceeded the height limit was blamed in the unusual accident. Witnesses said stacks of wood on the truck struck and severed the overhead bus line on Changshou Road downtown.

The sharp end of the ruptured cable also ruptured the tire of a passing transit bus.

The pedestrians were struck by the cable and injured.

The pregnant victim, surnamed Shi, told reporters that she squatted and protected her head with her arms after hearing a big bang.

But the falling cable hit her body, she said. She suffered a cut on the back of her head and bruises on her back.

The truck was towed away by traffic police.

Part of the road was closed for emergency cable repairs, causing a two-hour traffic jam.
