41 more trains for city Metro
AN additional 41 trains are to be bought for the city Metro system to increase capacity on lines 1 and 7.
The Shanghai Development and Reform Commission recently approved the purchase by Metro operator Shentong Group of 11 eight-carriage trains for Line 1 and 30 six-carriage trains for Line 7.
Line 1 is the oldest and one of the busiest routes among Shanghai’s 14 lines.
Its 50-plus trains ferry around 1.2 million passengers a day, with an interval of 2 minutes 44 seconds between trains at rush hour.
Line 7 extends out to several large residential neighborhoods in Baoshan District, connects to other lines in downtown and stretches over to the Pudong New Area.
Its current 38 trains ferry about 700,000 commuters a day. The interval between trains at rush hour is between three to six minutes.
The purchase will go through a bidding process, said the commission.
The Metro operator did not say how long it would take before the new trains will go into service.
