700 new cabbies

The second batch of non-local cabbies - 700-strong - have passed training and started service behind the wheels, bringing the total number of non-Shanghainese cabbies to 1,000, according to the local taxi watchdog. The recruitment program of non-local taxi drivers was launched by the local government in an effort to help counter a growing shortfall of cabbies. Taxi drivers frequently work long hours for a relatively modest salary - factors that deter many younger local residents from applying.
