Airport parking fees get look

CITY authorities said they would consider lowering the parking fares at the city's two international airports in response to public complaints and a local government advisory body.

Many drivers park their cars along the elevated roads toward the airports waiting to pick up passengers.

Meanwhile, parking lots at the airports and traffic hubs are not fully occupied.

"It's not the parking lots around the business areas," said Cheng Dong, a member of city top advisory body, in a proposal. "The parking places at the airports are part of the public infrastructure and shall offer more convenience for people."

For the parking lot at the Pudong International Airport, drivers are charged 10 yuan (US$1.56) per hour for the first two hours and 5 yuan for each hour after two hours until 12 hours. It's free for vehicles to park for less than 20 minutes.

But drivers find it's hard to pick up within such a short time. "You cannot tell the exact waiting time to pick up the person you expect," said a driver surnamed Yu, illegally stopping his car on the elevated road at the Pudong airport.

Yu said he usually pays at least 20 yuan any time he parks at the airport.
