All aboard as trams return after 30 years

TRAMS in Pudong's Zhangjiang High-Tech Park began taking passengers yesterday. It's been 30 years since trams were last seen in the city.

A ticket costs 2 yuan (29 US cents) and the Shanghai Public Transportation Card can be used.

"The tram greatly improves the transportation facilities in the industrial park," said Chen Jianzhong, deputy director of the Pudong New Area Public Transport Co Ltd.

A 10-kilometer route will link the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park Metro Station on Line 2, major industrial sites and residential communities in the hi-tech park.

Existing bus routes in the park will remain for an initial period but they may be changed later.

The tram service runs from 5:45am to 11pm every day with an interval of 10 minutes in peak hours to 20 minutes off-peak.

It can travel at up to 50 kilometers per hour and can carry up to 220 passengers.

There are 15 stops with an average distance of 640 meters between them.
