All aboard for Yan’an Road bus changes

BUSES to run along the city’s “medium-capacity” project on Yan’an Road are expected to carry the number 71, currently one of the key bus lines on the road, the city’s transportation commission said yesterday.
The project — to be put into operation in January — is a 17.5-kilometer trunk road connecting the districts of Huangpu, Jing’an, Minhang and Changning. Eighteen-meter-long electric buses that can carry up to 150 people will run along the route.
The project’s bus network plan has also been released to seek public opinion.
According to the authority, there are 64 bus lines running along Yan’an Road, with 69 buses an hour on average traveling on the road during peak times, which results in a bus network becoming too complicated, with too many bus stops.
According to the newly released plan, two bus lines, 925 and 936, will be canceled. Ten lines, including 42 and 48, will be shortened.
Ten bus lines, including 855 and 911, will be adjusted. Four bus routes will be added near Hongqiao business district and National Exhibition and Convention Center.
The planned changes are expected to be carried out in three phases. Six bus lines will be adjusted before the project goes into operation, 13 will see changes after the project is launched, and 7 lines are expected to be adjusted a year after the project’s operation. Roads nearby will also be improved.
Forty 18-meter long electric buses will run through the whole project, from Yan’an Road E. and Zhongshan Road E1 to Shenkun Road, according to Shanghai Television Station.
The operating hours will be from 4:30am to 11:30pm between Zhangshan Road E1 to Shenkun Road while a section line between Huangpi Road N. and Shenkun Road will be running from 6am to 9pm. The ticket price on the buses will be 2 yuan (29 US cents).
