An umbrella might come in handy this week ...

DON'T forget to take an umbrella with you over the next few days, and make sure to dress for the heat - rain is forecast and temperatures will rise over 30 degrees Celsius, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

Conditions outdoors will be humid as the city is still in the plum rain season with its overcast skies, frequent rain and high heat.

Today, temperatures will range between 25 and 33 degrees with the possibility of afternoon showers.

Heavy rainfall is likely tomorrow and Wednesday.

Dense fog shrouded the city yesterday due to high humidity, weak winds and temperatures which exceeded 30 degrees in the afternoon.

The city entered the plum rain season on June 7 this year, 10 days earlier than usual. The trend has been noticeable since 2000 and some weather experts say this is probably due to climate change.

The season is so named as it is the time the fruit matures.

Experts say rainfall during the season is now heavier than before while temperatures are cooler.

Usually, plum rain season weather can make people feel sticky and sweat more easily.

Mildew can be a problem because of the high humidity, and the season is also when termites attack.

Also known as white ants, they chew through wood and can destroy houses. They are a headache for many residents, especially those who live in older houses.

Shanghai forecasters are predicting 24 high-temperature days this summer, the same as last year.

It is considered to be a high-temperature day when temperatures reach 35 degrees.
