Another heat wave on the way to delay the arrival of autumn

Another heat wave is expected to hit Shanghai this week, with temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius from tomorrow to Thursday, according to forecasters.
A high of 37.2 degrees yesterday marked this summer’s 30th high temperature day — days with temperatures over 35 degrees.
Today’s maximum temperature is forecast to be 37 degrees and there may be showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Earlier, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau had predicted that there would be 27 high temperatures days this summer but it has now revised that to 40.
Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer at the bureau, said that according to Xujiahui observatory data since 2001 August should have an average of two to three high temperature days but this year there are expected to be more than 10 before the month is over.
This Wednesday is Li Qiu, or autumn begins, the 13th of 24 Chinese solar terms but experts say it doesn’t mark the real coming of autumn. This will be when the average daily temperature is recorded at below 22 degrees for five straight days.
Among several ways to keep cool in the current heat, some Shanghai residents have been enjoying visits to the city’s shopping malls.
One retired woman in her 70s, surnamed Zhang, sat on a bench in the Cloud Nine mall in Hongkou District for over four hours, reading her newspaper and enjoying snacks. Zhang said she came to the mall to cool off every evening, saving the money she would have spent on air conditioning at home.
A young mother said she and her family were frequent visitors to the mall. “My son can play in the children’s playground, while we can do our shopping in air-conditioned stores,” she said.
The stores are happy as they are reporting a sharp increase in the number of customers.
“Our turnover has doubled, especially during the evening,” a staff member at Carrefour said.
A security guard said that they would not be stopping visitors from coming in to keep cool, unless they were improperly dressed — for example, by not wearing shirts.
