Bad cabbies, trainers target of evaluations

CABBIES, long-distance bus drivers and driving school personnel are among those who will be subject to evaluation by the city starting on April 1, and may find themselves booted from their trade for serious violations, officials said yesterday.

The evaluation will include accident rates.

Taxi drivers will have their operating license suspended for frequent and severe violations. They would not be allowed back in the business for five years, local traffic authorities said.

"The evaluation will be a key part of the training, firing and the salary and bonuses of local drivers," said officials with Shanghai Transport and Port Administration.

Long-distance and tourism bus drivers will be among those evaluated, but not city bus drivers, who are evaluated separately, officials said.

Those drivers and driving instructors will have 20 points to start during the evaluation period of 12 months.

Cabbies would lose all 20 points if severe, usually fatal, accidents occurred and the cabby was at fault.

Driving school trainers taking bribes from students would lose half their points and need retraining.
