Bigger and better

THE new waiting hall at the north square of Shanghai Railway Station will impress travelers, officials said yesterday.

It is now 15,500 square meters, about the size of 37 basketball courts, compared to the original building's 1,000 square meters.

The building has been extended 25 meters to the north and 60 meters both to the east and west, to handle more passengers, with a designed capacity of 8,000.

Station entrances are topped with 12 huge membrane structures, shaped like magnolia flowers, said the designer, East China Architectural Design and Research Institute.

The new station building has 11 ticket booths and waiting rooms with 4,000 seats.
