Biggest rainstorm soaks city, stalls traffic, floods homes
THE biggest rainstorm of the year hit the city this afternoon, causing big traffic trouble. Weather forecaster issued the second red rainstorm alert on the weather history -- the most serious alert on the three-scale warning system.
More than 3,000 homes in Luwan, Huangpu, Zhabei and Jinshan districts were flooded.
Water also collected on more than 70 roads in seven districts, such as Changning and Xuhui, according to the Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters.
The Expo site in Pudong New Area had the most rainfall, of 12.9 centimeters. Seven districts had rainfall of over 10 centimeters, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
