Boy, 4, killed in horror smash
CITY police yesterday detained a 27-year-old driver who had allegedly been drinking alcohol and was speeding in a borrowed car when it hit and killed a four-year-old boy.
The tragedy was the latest in a series of similar traffic accidents across the country that has raised public concern over road safety.
Jiading District police said the man, Gao Jing, hit the boy surnamed Lu about 8pm on Thursday while driving east on Shuangzhu Road.
Gao's car crashed into a minivan after hitting the boy, injuring five more people in that vehicle.
Three of the injured were sent to Jiading Central Hospital. Two suffered broken legs and one neck injuries.
All three were last night in a stable condition.
The boy, who came from Henan Province to visit his migrant parents, was playing on the unlit roadside.
"I tried to catch my boy but it was too late," said boy's father, covering his face with the hands. He said the body landed about 50 meters away after impact.
The boy's mother also witnessed the accident and fainted.
The family was chatting with two other people in a greenery area at the time of the accident, leaving the boy to play alone.
Gao lost control of his car and entered westbound lanes, police said.
"I was the last one to be pulled out," Zhang Sikun, from Guangdong Province, said from his hospital bed. He was sitting next to the driver of the minivan Gao hit.
Zhang will undergo surgery on his broken right leg.
With eyes staring at the hospital ward ceiling, his neck protected by a brace, Yan Zhikai, another victim of the accident, found it difficult to speak.
Gao walked from the wreck of his car with a woman and both were unscathed.
Police took Gao away soon after they arrived. Police said yesterday Gao's blood alcohol level was 0.36 milligrams per milliliter.
Meanwhile, police detained a drunk driver who hit 26 pedestrians, killing one and injuring more than 10, in northwest China's Heilongjiang Province on Wednesday.
Hangzhou police are investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl who was killed on Tuesday night by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver.
A southwest Sichuan Province court sentenced a drunk driver to death on July 23 in the first judgment. The driver killed four people.
