Brake failure produces Metro chaos
A BRAKE failure on a train near People's Square Station delayed Metro passengers for half an hour on Line 2 this morning.
The train, heading from west to Pudong, stopped in the tunnel before arriving at the station at 8:50am. Metro chiefs ordered the following train to shunt it out of the way.
An emergency plan went into place immediately, restricting the number of people allowed into Metro stations on the line and telling passengers to take other forms of transport where possible.
Because it was peak hour large numbers of commuters were affected by the accident.
Some passengers onboard the stopped train opened the doors with the emergency exit handles and walked along the tunnel to the station delaying the rescue operation even further.
At 9:21am the train was shunted to the side and the Metro began operating normally again. The accident is being investigated.
The transport authority is considering organizing a special bus team to help if there are breakdowns on the Metro, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
The current metro emergency plan is not satisfactory as one metro line breakdown can affect other lines, Sun Jianping, vice director of Shanghai Construction and Transportation Commission said recently.
