Breakdown leads to Metro chaos
THOUSANDS of rush-hour commuters were delayed after Metro Line 11 suffered a breakdown in services yesterday.
Four stops along the line heading downtown were out of service for nearly two hours during the incident, according to the Metro operator.
The fault happened at 8:30am when the operator reported an equipment failure at the line's Jiangsu Road Station in Changning District.
"Live broadcast from the Jiangsu Road Station on Line 11. The station fully packed. Huge crowds and no trains have arrived in more than 20 minutes," a witness said in a post that was uploaded online.
Among the affected passengers, Rachel, an office worker, said she had stuck at a station waiting for a train. In the end, she had to take a bus to get to work.
Metro officials said the problem led to long gaps between trains arriving at stations as they moved slowly at the four affected stops. Many passengers coming into work were advised to disembark from trains and take other modes of transport instead.
At the Jiangsu Road Station, crowds stood on limited platform space, with some having waited for over an hour.
Normal services didn't resume until 9:50am.
