Burst pipe stops traffic
A WATER pipe in Jing'an District burst early yesterday, causing a 20-square-meter area of roadway to collapse.
Police blocked traffic at the intersection of Fengyang Road and Datian Road because of the hole in the road which was 3 meters deep.
Water supplies in the area were not affected and the pipe was repaired shortly hours after the 3am incident. The cause is still under investigation, but it is believed that the old age of the pipe network may have been to blame.
A security guard at a nearby construction site, said a cascade of water 1 meter high had gushed into the air and for about 40 minutes 100 meter along the road was 15 centimeters deep in water.
The flow of water carried a large quantity of dirt and silt with it, some even affecting stores at the side of the road. "We saw many firemen cleaning up the silt when we were heading for the office," said a resident surnamed Cai who lives nearby.
Workers at the site said the possibility of further collapses could not be ruled out.
The pipe was repaired quickly, but it took workers more than four hours to fill the hole.
