Bus routes rerouted for Yan’an road tunnel repairs

TWELVE bus routes will be rerouted or shortened due to repairs on the busy Yan’an Road E. tunnel after the Chinese New Year, authorities announced yesterday.

The tunnel was built in the 1980s with one portion of the tunnel in operation for 26 years. It is the busiest underwater tunnel in the city with about 90,000 vehicles, on an average, using it everyday.

The 12 routes include Airport Bus Line 5 linking Pudong International Airport to Shanghai Railway Station and the Airport Night Bus from Pudong to Hongqiao International Airport.

Airport Bus Line 5 will be rerouted over Nanpu Bridge while the Airport Night Bus will make a detour via Renmin Road Tunnel. The new routes will extend the travel time by 10 to 20 minutes but there will be no changes in the stops.

Traffic on one section — Pudong to Puxi — will be completely closed for a year but traffic in the opposite direction will remain unaffected.

Bus route No. 935 from Huangpu District to Pudong will be suspended, while bus No. 936 will suspend operation in the Pudong section. The Puxi section of Bus No. 983 will be shut.

Other eight bus lines will adjust their routes and take the Renmin Road Tunnel to cross the Huangpu River. They are No. 01, No. 455, Xinchuan Line, Shangchuan Line, Tunnel No. 3, Tunnel No. 6, Tunnel No. 9 and Tunnel Night Line.

Shanghai transport authority said it expects the Renmin Road Tunnel to handle about 40 percent of the traffic once the Yan’an Road Tunnel is closed.

Vehicles can also use Xinjian Road and Fuxing Road E. tunnels besides the Nanpu Bridge.

The renovations will include upgrading some of the facilities on the Yan’an Road E. Tunnel like the fire-fighting system and relaying the electrical cables. In an eco-friendly measure, energy-saving LED lights will be installed while the wind exhaust system will be altered to save power consumption.
