Bus-truck collision in road tunnel kills 1, wounds 15
A bus driver was killed and 15 passengers injured when their bus crashed into a truck loaded with steel rods this morning as it traveled in the Yangtze River tunnel linking the city's Chongming Island with Pudong.
The collision occurred at 10:30am in the tunnel when the Shenchong Line bus suddenly rammed into the rear of the truck, causing its load of two-meter-long steel rods thrusting into the front of the bus, killing the driver instantly, one witness said.
Among the injured, a 63-year-old man suffered fractures in his right leg and some cuts in his chest. He was out of danger after treatment in the Changhai Hospital. But doctors said they will operate on his wounded leg which probably needs to be amputated.
Four passengers were suffering fractures and contusions while other 10 went home or to work after some treatment, said Su Jiacan, a doctor at the hospital.
Xu Bing, one of the wounded, told Shanghai Daily that they saw the driver bent on the steering wheel with blood coming from his mouth after the clash.
The 47-year-old driver surnamed Cao had worked as a bus driver for 10 years. He was confirmed dead on the spot.
It is the third accident within one month that Shenchong Line buses have crashed into other vehicles on the tunnel-bridge highway, causing at least 20 causalities.
