CBD-Hongqiao airport bus to cease tomorrow
AFTER a decade in service, the airport shuttle route between the Jing'an Temple terminus and Hongqiao International Airport will shut down tomorrow, according to the urban transport watchdog.
Increasingly sluggish passenger volumes and improving Metro services have made the closure necessary and reasonable, said local transport authorities.
The shuttle route operates between the terminus at Jing'an Temple area and Terminal 1 of Hongqiao Airport. It used to be packed with travelers, but in recent years after Metro Lines 2 and 10 have gradually been extended to the airport, more passenger have opted for subway trains instead of the bus.
The shuttle service faced further pressure after the airport shifted most of its flights to Terminal 2 in 2010, causing passenger flows to Terminal 1 to dry up.
A previous Shanghai Daily investigation showed dispatchers at the Jing'an Temple terminus were often kept idling because of a slack timetable and sometimes a shuttle bus would set off for the airport with only a single passenger.
Posters informing the public of the service closure have been pasted at the Jing'an Temple terminus stop, explaining the decision would avoid a waste of public resources.
But the practice still drew voices of disapproval from the public with some people arguing that it was inconvenient for them to travel by Metro with large amounts of luggage.
Other shuttle buses running between local districts and Terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport will maintain normal services, however.
