Car crash kills woman, injures 12

A car accident killed one middle-aged woman and injured 12 others, two severely, in a neighborhood in Shanghai today, local police and witnesses said.
Witnesses said the accident took place at about 8am in a neighborhood in Linyi Road of Pudong New District, when a car suddenly lost control and swerved around madly.
Altogether 13 people were run down, mostly senior citizens who were en route to a nearby vegetable market, witnesses said.
The dead is a 56-year-old woman. The oldest of the injured was 87 and the youngest was an infant, local police said.
The injured are being treated at local hospitals, mostly suffering bone fractures, police said.
An initial investigation shows that the car driver attempted to hit the brake but mistakenly hit the gas while encountering an emergency.
The case is being investigated, police said.
