Car ferry fall victim's family gets payout

THE family of a woman who drowned after her sedan fell from a ferry into the river last Friday has been paid 400,000 yuan by the ferry company but the cause of the tragedy is still being investigated.
Shanghai Yatong Co Ltd, operator of ferry services to Chongming Island, told Shanghai Daily that the payment was not an admission of liability.
``We meant to comfort the family and the money paid so far is not a result of any compensation agreement as the cause of the incident and who should be held responsible is still being investigated officially,'' said Fan Benxiao, a company manager, today.
It's the first such fatality in recent memory. The ferry company management said that years ago an unoccupied car fell into the river when a boat lost control and hit a dock because of a mechanical problem.
