Changxing Metro link by 2020
SHANGHAI'S second-largest island, Changxing, currently home to nearly 100,000 people, will have the city's first Metro island link by 2020, Metro constructors said yesterday.
Shanghai has planned another 13 Metro projects - eight new lines and five extensions - to begin construction from 2010 to 2020.
The completion of those and ongoing projects would more than triple the length of the current network, from 234 to 877 kilometers, Metro constructors said.
The projects and their planned routes have been posted on Chinese Website www.envir.gov.cn to get public opinion about possible environmental impacts, which will be considered in the projects' appraisals.
Some of the new projects are also waiting approval by central government.
The planned first phase of Metro Line 19 will travel from the Jinqiao area of Pudong to Changxing Island via the tunnel being built as part of the Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge Project, which is due to open to vehicle traffic by May. The Metro will be extended to Chongming Island with the bridge part of the project.
Another planned project is the extension of Line 5 from the Hongqiao Integrated Transport Hub - which will handle Metros, high-speed trains and buses accessing the airport - to Xinzhuang, a major residential area in the southwest of the city.
The Metro network currently has eight lines but another three will open when the Shanghai World Expo opens in May next year.
