Cheating found among cabbies

The city's taxi watchdog found that tampered meters remain a common practice in local cabs while conducting a sweep around high-end hotels early yesterday morning.

The law-enforcement team checked 135 taxis and seized six cheats with tampered meters, said officials. Some other cabbies were found taking detours to make more money by taking advantage of foreign passengers' lack of knowledge about city routes. Officials found riders had been charged more than 250 yuan (US$39) to reach a hotel from the Pudong International Airport, when the standard fares were about 180 yuan.
