Chilliness, rain return to interrupt nice days

A STRONG cold front should chill the city today with moderate rain and a low of 3 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a blue cold wave alert at 5pm yesterday warning of a temperature drop of 8 degrees in 48 hours.

Today is forecast to be overcast to moderately rainy and the high should be 7 degrees Celsius. The sky should be cloudy tomorrow and the mercury should remain the same.

The cold should last into Sunday, when the low is forecast to drop to 1 degree Celsius in the morning, bureau forecasters said. It should be colder, however, in the suburbs.

Temperatures "should soon bounce back and hit 10 degrees Celsius in the afternoon," said Man Liping, a chief service officer of the bureau.

Early next week should be partly cloudy and temperatures should rise quickly after Sunday, Man added.

Shanghai's meteorological spring usually starts around March 17, when the average temperature reaches 10 degrees Celsius or above for five consecutive days.
