Christmas forecast calls for pleasant weather
The early part of this week is expected to be pleasant as the temperature climbs gradually to reach a weekly high of 10 degrees Celsius on Christmas Day.
Yesterday was dongzhi, or winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. A minus 1.5 degrees Celsius reading was recorded in Chongming Island in the morning.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau predicted a mix of sun and clouds from today through Christmas on Wednesday. Today’s high will be 9 degrees with a low of 3 degrees, the bureau said.
Meanwhile severe smog is not forecast early this week, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.
The air quality index is expected to range between 115 and 135 in the lightly polluted range this morning, the center said. It will drop to between 65 and 85 in the afternoon, signaling good air quality. The major pollutant will be PM2.5, which refers to airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are the main cause of urban smog.
The weather is expected to be the same tomorrow, but the high will climb to 10 degrees both on Christmas Day and Thursday, Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the bureau said.
The bureau said it will turn cloudy to overcast on Thursday.
It also said a cold front will arrive on Friday, bringing strong winds from the north. The temperature is forecast to range between 3 and 6 degrees on Friday, according to the bureau.
