City braced for Qingming traffic
TUESDAY, the last day of the three-day Qingming Festival holiday, is expected to be the busiest day for the city’s expressways with 1.36 million cars using them, Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said yesterday.
Expressways in Shanghai will be toll-free during the holiday for cars with up to seven seats, and 5 percent more traffic than last year’s holiday is predicted, according to the bureau.
Fewer cars on the roads are forecast for the first two days of the holiday, but tomb sweepers and tourists are expected to cause heavier traffic in Jiading and Qingpu districts and the Pudong New Area, where large cemeteries are located. Middle Ring Road and Yan’an Elevated Road are likely to be busy, too.
Shanghai traffic police said more police officers would be deployed around the cemeteries and on the expressways and elevated roads during the holiday.
