City lags behind in download speeds

SHANGHAI and other top-tier metropolises in China are lagging behind cities in remote provinces in terms of Internet download speeds, a new survey has found.

Shanghai ranks only 14th nationwide for broadband downloading speed, according to Thunder Networking Technologies, operator of Xunlei, a popular downloading and file-sharing service.

However, Shanghai fared better than other leading cities - such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen - which failed to make the top 50 at all.

Many second, third and even fourth-tier cities showed turned in much better performances.

Xiangfan City in Hubei Province recorded the fastest download speed, followed by Erdos in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Jilin City in Jilin Province.

For WiFi downloading speeds, Shanghai fared even worse - last in the Thunder list, with Beijing just two places ahead.

Thunder Networking Technologies investigated 34 provinces, autonomous regions and metropolises in China, plus numerous Internet operators, including China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile.
