City poised to enter earliest summer as mercury climbs
SHANGHAI will likely enter its earliest summer today as temperatures continue to soar.
With sufficient sunshine, the city's mercury reached 29.5 degrees Celsius yesterday in downtown Xujiahui area and the readings are expected to climb higher to around 32 degrees through the weekend. The weather should remain sunny and cloudy, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Today is li xia, the beginning of summer, the seventh of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar. According to the Chinese standard of meteorological season changing, summer starts when the average temperature of an area reaches 22 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days after li xia, usually around May 5. The first of the five days is regarded as the beginning of summer.
In Shanghai, the average temperature surpassed 22 degrees yesterday and is likely to remain high over the following four days starting today, according to the observatory's five-day forecast.
Average temperature
Showers are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday and the readings on those two days should range from a low of 20 degrees to a high of 26. If the average temperature of these two days is 22 degrees, which is highly likely, today would be the first day of summer this year.
Shanghai usually enters summer at the end of May and if the season starts today, the city will have its earliest summer in its 139-year-old meteorological history.
Meanwhile, the city air was lightly polluted yesterday due to less wind and the air quality is not likely to improve much today, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
The center issued a poor air quality warning this morning, warning people with respiratory diseases and weak immunity to stay at home.
The center predicted that local air today and tomorrow will be lightly polluted.
