City to broadcast real-time congestion index for motorists
SHANGHAI'S urban traffic watchdog is planning to introduce a congestion index for TV, radio and Internet broadcast to report real-time road conditions on some key routes and a prototype program is now being tested on Sina Weibo microblogging website.
The real-time congestion index is more accurate and vivid, using numbers of 0-100 to indicate fast and smooth traffic to a total standstill.
Motorists can select their routes according to the real-time index to avoid road congestions.
Compared with the current warning system that shows traffic density with three colors, the new system is more accurate and can tell whether traffic is improving or worsening in a particular section of a road.
